Taking on Projects Outside of Your Wheelhouse

Authored By: Luke Waite

Let’s face it, we all from time to time have to take on projects that are not in our wheelhouse. Either we are taking on a project as a stretch goal, taking over a project for a colleague, or have started a new job with new tasks that aren’t familiar just yet.

It happens to all of us. The unfortunate reality for some of us is that our businesses are running on a skeleton crew (those just trying to keep the business alive) are most likely to take on new projects that might be a stretch.

Here are a few quick tips to tackle even the hardest of projects that seem outside of your wheelhouse.

Make a Plan…and Stick to It

Seems simple, but the reality is that you need a plan. So take some time to plan out how you are going to attack the project. This will do two things. One, it will quantify and help you grasp the project even if this plan shifts and changes along the way. Two, it offers a sense of scope that will help track big picture progress along the way. Both of these together will actually help you think through whether or not you are using your time effectively, efficiently, and also keep you encouraged as you work down your plan.

One Step at a Time

Now that you have a plan, you can start working down that list and making progress. As you've heard it said, Rome wasn’t built in a day and your project probably won't be finished in a day either. That’s ok. Just take it one step at a time. Progress is enough. Little by little friend.

Big Issues - Ask for Help!

Now, more than ever, your team needs to function as a TEAM. Every person must work towards a collective goal. When a big issue or problem comes up, ask your team for help. You never know what hidden talents your teammates hold. Don’t be too proud to say, “I don’t know how to do ‘x’, can you help me?”

Remember, done is better than perfect.
